Mother Road The Mother Road of Route 66, which connected those fleeing from the dust bowl of Oklahoma to the orange groves of California, is the setting of this Depression-era novel. Leona is a single woman who is helping her widowed brother-in-law, Andy, raise his two daughters. When Andy is bitten by a rabid skunk, he is unable to run the family's gas station 66 mother road route spirit and all seems lost until Yates, a man who's life Andy saved many years ago, arrives under somewhat mysterious circumstances.
